Relinde Reiffers posted an update in the group Intervention Journal Now published: March 2013 Issue of 'Intervention, the International Journal of Mental Health, Psychosocial Work & Counselling in Areas of Armed Conflict' This anniversary issue has several articles with open access.

This anniversary issue marks the start of the second decade of the journal. For the Table of Contents and the freely downloadable Editorial see: http://journals.lww.com/interventionjnl/pages/default.aspx

Karen Elizabeth Paul & Mark van Ommeren explore the concept of ‘single session therapy’ and its potential utility in humanitarian settings. This is highly relevant because the first session of a psychosocial worker with a client could also be the last session. Temporarily this article is freely accessible.

Shireen Tawil critiques the use of a trauma lens to view clients in the occupied Palestinian territory, because this may contribute to divorcing Palestinian mental distress from the political situation that produces the distress. Tawil advocates for an ecological mental health care, based on a social justice model that would not just treat symptoms, but target socio-political issues as the cause of distress. This may generate debate and we encourage readers to react.

Simon van den Berg, Grace Akello & Shobna Sonpar have analysed the location of the authors in Intervention over the past ten years: Approximately 36% of the authors were from Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), Latin America and Eastern Europe. Over the ten years the content of the journal shifted considerably. This article is can also be downloaded for free.
Hillary L. Prag & Gwen Vogel report on the use of therapeutic photography with young Burmese refugees in Thailand.

Mohammad Abo-Hilal & Mathijs Hoogstad, a Syrian psychiatrist and a Dutch psychologist, describe how Syrian mental health professionals who recently fled the country struggle to establish mental health and psychosocial services for fellow refugees in Jordan.

Barbara Juen et al. describe how they developed training materials for lay counsellors in humanitarian organisations in European settings. Their approach may also have significance for low-resource areas where MHPSS professionals are scarce.

Celia Maria Robaina, a psychologist from Uruguay, shares an overview of 25 years of working with survivors of state-sponsored violence in her country.

Peter Ventevogel posted an update in the group Intervention Journal CALL FOR PAPERS - CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
for a special issue of Social Science & Medicine - Special Issue on Medical Humanitarianism

Guest editors: Sharon Abramowitz, Mary-Jo Good, Byron Good, Arthur Kleinman & Catherine Panter-Brick

‘Medical humanitarianism’ - health care delivery by relief organizations - has a prominent international presence. Increasingly, social scientists find themselves working alongside humanitarians in states of emergency, armed conflict, food crises, and natural disasters

The goal of this special issue is to provide state-of-the-art analyses of medical humanitarianism from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. The editors seek to develop a base for comparative analysis and insight, and promote dialogue between social scientists and humanitarian practitioners and seek (i) systematic, comprehensive, or critical reviews of the literature, (ii) original research articles that make a substantive empirical contribution, (iii) well-articulated critiques that go further than a simple overview or commentary. Thus papers are to make strong empirical and theoretical contributions, and have strong policy relevance. Of interest are the following issues:

	- The content of medical humanitarian services, and their uniqueness in terms of healthcare delivery.
- Insights generated from a comparative perspective on medical humanitarianism.
- The characteristics of relations and transactions in medical humanitarian encounters.
- Ways in which medical humanitarians take culture, social relations, and issues of demography, equity, and justice into quotidian practice.
- Ways in which personal relations structure the dynamics and shape of medical humanitarianism.
- Ways in which medical humanitarians negotiate need vs. scarcity, limits vs. access, independence vs. negotiation, and other critical conflicts in humanitarian practice.
- The application of medical humanitarianism to International Criminal Court proceedings, human rights testimonies, or political witnessing.
- Social, political, and historical analyses of the growth of medical humanitarianism, and assessment of risk and resilience in populations facing health crises.
- Other issues of funding, policy, translational research, legal protection, clinical care, and public health interventions.

Abstract submission deadline is 31 March 2013. Please submit a 250 word unstructured abstract (specify issues, sample, analysis, and take-home messages) and three punchy research highlights (each 85 characters). All submissions will be reviewed by guest editors, for originality and substance. If your abstract meets Soc. Sci. Med. quality requirements, you will be asked to prepare a full 8,000 words article for Social Science & Medicine, with final publication contingent on a rigorous peer-review process.

Submit abstract and research highlights by email to sabramowitz@ufl.edu or online at http://j.mp/15iu7Ew.
