Evidence-based mental health and psychosocial support in humanitarian settings: gaps and opportunities (58.5Kb)
Wietse A Tol and Mark van Ommeren
In this editorial, we discuss the emerging field of MHPSS from the perspective of evidence-based practice. We describe challenges to evidence-based MHPSS practice, and highlight areas where concerted action may either (A) improve the quality of MHPSS programming (by basing decision-making on research findings) and/or (B) improve MHPSS research efforts (by making the pursuit of reliable and valid knowledge more responsive to needs of affected populations). We structure the discussion in accordance with steps of the programme cycle where empirical evidence may support decision-making, that is needs assessment;
programme design; implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
Discussion paper: Programming and Evaluation for Psychosocial Programmes (317.4Kb)
Professor Alastair Ager
This paper gives guidance for the planning and implementation of psychosocial programmes as part of development assistance projects. It aims to turn the reader’s attention to the two chief questions involved in such planning:What are we appropriately seeking to achieve? What is the best way of going about this? For responding to these two questions, the author suggests creating a logical framework (‘logframe’) for identifying goals and measuring success. Finally, the paper explains the tools for project evaluation, and stresses the need for issues surrounding implementation and evaluation to be addressed at the stage of project planning.
Where are the Girls?: Girls in Fighting Forces in North Uganda, Sierra Leon and Mozambique (591.3Kb)
Authors: Dyan Mazurana and Susan McKay
Rights and Democracy, 2004
This study raises our awareness of the 'militarization of the lives of girls in the fighting forces and the role they play'. As it was necessary to separate women from children in order to ensure that women's rights were understood to be human rights, it is now necessary to recognize the realities of girls in armed forces, as the study concludes, in order to recognize gender as a key factor in maintaining fighting forces.

Conceptualizing Stigma (212.7Kb)
BruceG.Link and JoC.Phelan
"The stigma concept has been criticized as being too vaguely defined and individually focused. In response to these criticisms, we define stigma as the co-occurrence of its components–labeling, stereotyping, separation, status loss, and discrimination–and further indicate that for stigmatization to occur,power must be exercised.The stigma concept we construct has implications for understanding several core issues in stigma research, ranging from the definition of the concept to the reasons stigma sometimes represents a very persistent predicament in the lives of persons affected by it."
