OCHA Somalia Famine and Drought Situation report September 15th-20th (813.6Kb)
I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES
· Partners are scaling up response activities in order to reach the worst-affected population to avert further unnecessary deaths. Food assistance partners have reached 1.39 million people in crisis so far in the first two weeks of September, compared to 1.3 million throughout the month of August.
· An estimated 585,000 urban dwellers in Somalia are projected to be in crisis by December if interventions are not scaled up, a quarter more than the first half of the year.
· According to UNICEF, children constitute 80 per cent of the worst-affected population in the current famine.
OCHA Horn of Africa Situation Report no. 14, September 15th 2011 (1.3Mb)
OCHA Sit Rep no. 14, Horn of Africa September 15th
HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES
· The number of beneficiaries reached in southern Somalia has increased in the last two months.
· The number of arrivals to the Dollo Ado refugee camps is slowing down, but mortality and malnutrition rates amongst the arrival population remain alarming.
· The volatile security situation in Sudan’s Blue Nile State and deteriorating situation in Somalia continue to drive Sudanese and Somali refugees into Ethiopia.
· On 8 and 9 September, Kenya hosted a regional summit titled “Ending Drought Emergencies: A Commitment to Sustainable Development”, in an effort to bring to the fore root issues of underdevelopment and climate change that have increased vulnerability to drought. The well attended summit endorsed the ‘Nairobi Strategy’ which aims to support pastoralism and strengthen early warning systems.

OCHA Somalia Situation Report no. 13, 7-13 September (804.9Kb)
I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES
· With the recent addition of a sixth area in famine, the number of people facing famine conditions and the risk of death in Somalia has increased from 350,000 to 750,000 people.
· Disease outbreaks continue to be a challenge in south central Somalia. Despite interventions, there will likely be an increase in malnutrition and mortality statistics in the next two months in part due to
the increased risk of disease that will come with the onset of the Dehr rains.
· Nearly one million Somalis now live as refugees in the four neighbouring countries and one third of Somalis are currently displaced.
· The current famine in Somalia continues to attract huge regional and international interests prompting the delivery of bilateral humanitarian assistance by donor governments outside of the established coordination system. Efforts are underway to capture the full extent of assistance being provided on the ground.
